If you’ve ever felt anxious for “no reason,” frozen in place during a tough conversation, or overwhelmed after what seemed like a small stressor—your nervous system was likely leading the way.

The truth is: your nervous system is not just reacting to life—it’s shaping how you experience it.

For Black women and women of color, who often carry both personal and generational trauma, understanding how your nervous system works is essential for healing. It helps you make sense of your reactions, respond with more compassion, and take back control of your peace.

Let’s explore how the Polyvagal Theory can guide you toward nervous system healing—and why that matters for your mental health.

What Is the Nervous System, Really?

Your nervous system is your body’s command center. It tells you when to fight, flee, freeze, or rest. It’s the invisible force behind how safe—or unsafe—you feel in your body, in relationships, and in the world.

And when you’ve experienced trauma, microaggressions, chronic stress, or even just the everyday grind of surviving—it stays on high alert.

But healing isn’t about “calming down” or “thinking positive.” It’s about creating real safety in your body so your system doesn’t have to stay in survival mode.

Enter: The Polyvagal Theory

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Polyvagal Theory helps us understand how our nervous system shifts between different states—and how we can guide it back to safety and connection.

Here are the three main states you move through:

🔺 Sympathetic: Fight or Flight

You’re on high alert. Your heart races, your breath shortens. This is the anxiety, hypervigilance, or urgency that comes with feeling unsafe—even if there’s no real danger in the moment.

🔻 Dorsal Vagal: Freeze or Shut Down

You feel numb, disconnected, exhausted. This is when the system says, “It’s too much. I can’t deal.” Often mistaken for laziness or depression, this state is actually your body trying to protect you.

🌿 Ventral Vagal: Rest, Connection, and Safety

This is your calm place. Here, your breath is slow, your heart is open, and you can show up fully in relationships, work, and rest. This is the goal—not constant calm, but flexible resilience.

Why This Matters for Your Mental Health

Your nervous system isn’t separate from your mental health—it is your mental health.

When you understand your system, you stop blaming yourself for being “too sensitive,” “too reactive,” or “too tired.” You start recognizing survival responses—and learning how to gently guide yourself back to center.

That’s where true healing begins.

Holistic Healing Through the Nervous System

At Healing Insight, we approach mental wellness through five interconnected layers—and the nervous system plays a vital role in each one:

  1. Physical Layer – Trauma lives in the body. We release it through movement, rest, and somatic practices.
  2. Energetic Layer – Every breath regulates your heart, your hormones, your energy. This is where breathwork shines.
  3. Mental/Emotional Layer – Feelings aren’t just in your mind—they’re bodily experiences that need to move.
  4. Wisdom Layer – When your system is calm, your intuition is clearer.
  5. Spiritual Layer – A regulated nervous system makes space for joy, stillness, and connection to something greater.

What Nervous System Healing Actually Looks Like

Healing doesn’t always mean hour-long meditations or silent retreats. Sometimes it’s:

  • Noticing your breath and slowing it down
  • Taking a mindful pause before responding in conflict
  • Shaking out tension after a hard meeting
  • Using cold water or movement to come back into your body
  • Grounding through rituals, music, or your ancestors’ wisdom
  • Saying no to something your body is screaming against

Especially for Black Women and Women of Color…

Your nervous system may be carrying trauma that’s not just yours. Colonialism, racism, gendered expectations, and survival-mode living have wired many of us to stay on guard.

And yet—you deserve rest. You deserve peace. You deserve to feel safe inside your own body. That’s why our work at Healing Insight goes beyond traditional mental health. We bring nervous system regulation, EMDR, somatic work, and culturally-rooted wisdom into the healing room—because you need all of you to heal.
