How Bilateral and Biolateral Music Support the Nervous System

Sound is more than background noise—it’s a tool for regulation, integration, and healing. Both bilateral and biolateral music are used in trauma-informed practices like EMDR and Brainspotting to help the brain process emotional material in a way that feels safe and contained.

▪️Bilateral music (used in EMDR) moves sound back and forth between the left and right ears to gently stimulate both hemispheres of the brain.

▪️Biolateral music (used in Brainspotting) does the same, but with a more fluid and organic movement that mirrors the body’s natural rhythms.

Both types of music support emotional processing, reduce overwhelm, and deepen access to the parts of the self that may not always be reached through talk alone.

How to Use It:

1. In Session: Your therapist may play this music through headphones or speakers while guiding you through EMDR or Brainspotting to help support dual awareness and deepen processing.

2. Personal Practice: You can listen to bilateral or biolateral music during journaling, meditation, or grounding exercises to support nervous system regulation.

3. Sleep & Stress Recovery: Some people find these tracks helpful before bed or during moments of heightened stress, using them to downshift the nervous system and restore a sense of calm.

Note: For best results outside of session, we recommend using headphones so the alternating sounds can work as intended.
